TRIVIA ABOUT HEALING MOOR MUD
MOOR MUD IS A PURELY NATURAL PRODUCT
Moor mud – an old natural resource with a versatile application spectrum has had an impact on humans’ health awareness for many years.
All around Bad Aibling, the oldest moor spa in Bavaria, you will find one of the largest high moor areas in Germany where the peat is transformed in an untouched manner.
All peat areas in Germany are declared as a strict nature reserve as they are a one-of-a-kind habitat for many rare plants and animals.
Typical moor areas are affected by birch trees, sundew, peat bog, bulrush as well as rare dragonflies and different species of frog. From a scientific point of view, the term moor identifies all of the wetlands area, whereas the basic material extracted from the moor area is called turf.
Colloquially, we also call the healing natural resource moor.
A GOOD MOOR TAKES ITS TIME
Most of today’s existing moors have their seeds in the post-glacial period, which means approximately 10,000 years ago. The melted ice left behind huge areas of wetlands in which dead plants decomposed into turf. The “Koller Filzen” in Bad Aibling is
one of the largest sound high moor areas in Germany. Starting in 1838, the precious natural resource has been used for moor applications. For this, only the valuable black peat is used which composes of the black and brown layers of the moor.
RESTORING MOOR AREAS
Due to the extreme conditions with constant waterlogging, acid soil moisture and nutrient deficiency, it is almost only possible for specialists among the sensitive plants or animals to survive. These include many endangered species on the red list. Many plants, e. g. spruce (commonly known as moor mountain pine), cotton grass and milk-parsley or the “carnivorous” sundew can be found only here.
Moreover, the crossed viper or dragonflies like e. g. The large white-faced darter and the yellow butterfly use the moor as habitat. However, there are many exploited moors
that considerably suffered the loss of usefulness for certain species and also their ability to lower the carbon level.
That is why we feel responsible for the particular protection and sustainable cultivation of our moor area.
All over Bavaria, more than 150 moors are being renaturated. Thus we also support the renaturation of our moor area where the nutrient deficiency is resolved and the moor area is continuously waterlogged. With this, we secure the moor’s surviving as a valuable cultivated landscape and resource of basic materials.
MOOR MEDICINE WITH A LONG TRADITION
In the old days, moor applications were a privilege reserved for the nobility. Only few people had the chance to enjoy the health potency of moor mud. In the beginning of the 19th century, moor spa towns emerged that today still enjoy great popularity.
Today, moor therapy is not a privilege for nobilities anymore – everybody can take home SCIO® Bad Aibling moor products and easily apply them. Moor packs are available in different sizes for cryotherapy as well as for thermotherapy.
PARTICULAR VALUABLE: HUMIC ACID
Many moor applications not only use the excellent thermal effects, but also let the peat’s ingredients have an influence on the organism. With this, the materials developing during humification (i. e. parts of plants converting in the moor) have a special significance. Without air, plant components like for example medicinal herbs become moor which can be envisioned
as some kind of concentrate of plant components that are beneficial to your health. By applying moor compresses, moor bath supplements and moor ointments the peat’s active ingredients can be directly absorbed through the skin.
Among other things, natural humic acid is contributing anti-inflammatory effects to moor mud.
VERSATILE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS
Moor mud can be used with many health problems, whether as a sole therapy or as a therapy supplement. These therapies have analgesic effects and stimulate healing processes for diseases of the musculoskeletal system like for example joint and back pain,
rheumatism or arthrosis as well as for gynecological conditions and for diseases of the inner organs.
